Book Review: Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone By Benjamin Stevenson

This story was a ride! I devoured this book over two days (but it would have been a one-day read if I didn’t have an event to attend). I cannot wait to read other books in this series when they come out!

“Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone” follows the Cunningham family. If there is a family that embodies the idea that a name means something, it is the Cunninghams. Unfortunately, for them, their last name is associated with crime. The narrator of the story Ernest “Ern” Cunningham, breaks the 4th wall as he outlines his family history. His dad launched their family notoriety when he killed a police officer in a robbery gone wrong. Ern’s brother Michael solidified the reputation when he too gets arrested and incarcerated for murder.

The Cunningham family gathers at a secluded ski resort for a family reunion- the first time they have all been together since Michael was sent to jail by the testimony of Ern. It’s been three years and Michael is getting out of prison, and maybe they will finally be together as a family again. The only problem is that three years is a long time, and everyone has a secret. Oh, did I mention that everyone in this family has killed someone? No? Honestly, the title should have given that away.

When a body is discovered at the resort, it doesn’t sit right with Ern. Drawing from his experience as a writer of books that outline how to write mystery novels following Robert Knox’s “rules,” Ern sets out to connect the dots and discover which among them is the killer.

If you like Golden Age mystery novels written by Agatha Christie or G.K. Chesterton, then you will probably like this story.
